Humans aren't the fastest or strongest animals, but we are definitely the smartest- we have iPads and televisions. We can thank our extremely developed brain for our survival. Our complex brain allows us to remember things that happened, when they happened, the weather when it happened, and how long ago they happened. Our brains also allow us to do high level thinking and tasks associated with it such as reading. Our brains have more recent parts, such as the neocortex (which is the largest part of the cerebral cortex in the Human brain.) The neocortex's function is spatial reasoning, conscious thought, language, sensory perception, and generation of motor commands. The brain is the processor or our central nervous system and is very important. In humans the spinal cord also plays a major role in survival. The spinal cord is made up of neural pathways. What this means is that information and responses are sent up and down it to their destinations, sort of like an information highway. Some of the cells that make up our spinal cord are so specialized and complex that they can't regenerate. This is why our spinal cords are well protected by the spinal column.
